Can hijab be stylish and fashionable?

Yes. Looking good is not against Islam: the Prophet ﷺ said Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. You can wear stylish, well-matched, colorful hijab outfits. The limit is when style becomes showing off or drawing men's attention, which the Quran calls tabarruj.

Beauty is allowed

The Prophet ﷺ said that no one with an atom's weight of pride in his heart will enter Paradise. A man asked about someone who likes his clothes and shoes to be nice. The Prophet replied that Allah is beautiful and loves beauty, and that pride means rejecting the truth and looking down on people (Sahih Muslim 91). So enjoying nice clothes is not pride.

قُلْ مَنْ حَرَّمَ زِينَةَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَخْرَجَ لِعِبَادِهِۦ وَٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ مِنَ ٱلرِّزْقِ "Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allāh which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?'" Quran 7:32

Where the line is

The Quran tells women not to "display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance" (Quran 33:33). Scholars describe tabarruj as dressing or behaving to show off beauty to non-mahram men. Signs you might be crossing the line:

  • Hijab styles that reveal hair, neck or shape.
  • Heavy makeup and glamour for public outings.
  • Choosing outfits mainly to get looks or likes.

Fame garments

The Prophet ﷺ warned against wearing a "garment of fame," clothing worn to stand out and be talked about (Sunan Abi Dawud 4029). That applies to extreme luxury and to extreme shabbiness worn to look pious. Balance is the goal.

Finding your style

  • Choose a few colors that suit you and match scarves to outfits.
  • Play with textures: jersey, cotton, crinkle, modal.
  • Follow modest fashion creators for ideas, but filter what's actually modest.
  • Dress for your setting: office, mosque, family dinner.

Looking neat and put-together can also show people that hijab is a positive choice. See Can Muslim women wear bright colors? and Can I wear makeup with hijab?

Key points
  • Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.
  • Stylish hijab is allowed.
  • Avoid tabarruj: showing off to attract men.
  • Keep coverage complete while being creative.
Tip: Before you leave, ask yourself one question: "Am I dressing to feel good, or to be looked at?" It keeps style and modesty in balance.
