Can I be buried next to my non-Muslim family as a Muslim?
It depends, but most scholars say Muslims should be buried with Muslims. That usually means a Muslim cemetery or a Muslim section of a public cemetery, which exist in many cities in Europe and the USA. Often that section is in the same cemetery as your family, just a short walk away. The key step is writing your wishes down now.
Why Muslims have separate graves
Muslim burial has its own rites: the body is washed (ghusl), wrapped in a simple shroud, prayed over (janazah), and buried facing Mecca, usually as soon as possible. For this reason, scholars of all four schools say Muslims are buried in Muslim graves rather than in a family plot among non-Muslims.
That doesn't mean rejecting your family. It's simply how Muslims are laid to rest.
What's available in the West
- Muslim sections in municipal cemeteries are common in the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the USA and Canada.
- Dedicated Muslim cemeteries exist near many large cities.
- Mosque burial services often handle washing, shrouding and paperwork.
- Burial funds: many mosques run low-cost schemes that cover funeral costs.
If your family's cemetery has a Muslim section, you can be close to them while still being buried the Islamic way.
Write it down
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "It is not permissible for any Muslim who has something to will to stay for two nights without having his last will and testament written and kept ready with him" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2738).
For converts this is especially important, because your family may not know Muslim rites. In your will, state that you are Muslim, that you want an Islamic burial, and which mosque or funeral service to contact. In many countries, funeral wishes aren't strictly legally binding, so also tell your next of kin and choose an executor you trust.
Talk to your family early
This conversation is easier while you're healthy. Explain that it's not about distance from them, but about how you want to meet Allah. Many families are comforted to know exactly what you want.

If it doesn't go as planned
If, despite your efforts, your family buries you elsewhere, the sin isn't on you. Allah judges you by your intention and what you were able to do.
- Most scholars say Muslims are buried with Muslims.
- Muslim sections exist in many Western cemeteries.
- Write an Islamic will and share your wishes.
- If others ignore your wishes, it's not your sin.
