Can I believe in evolution as a Muslim?

It depends on what you mean by evolution. Muslims believe Allah is the Creator of everything, and that Adam was created directly by Allah, without parents. On the evolution of other plants and animals, scholars differ: some reject it, while others say it can be accepted as the way Allah created, as long as Allah remains the Creator.

What all Muslims agree on

  • Allah created everything. Nothing happens by "blind chance" outside His will.
  • Adam was created specially. The Quran describes Adam as created from clay or dust, then given life by Allah.
  • Humans have a unique dignity and a soul given by Allah.
إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِيسَىٰ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ ءَادَمَ ۖ خَلَقَهُۥ مِن تُرَابٍ "Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust." Quran 3:59

Just as Jesus was born without a father, Adam was created without a father or mother. That's why most scholars say Adam didn't descend from earlier species.

Evolution of other living things

Here, Muslim views vary:

  • Many traditional scholars reject evolution entirely and believe each kind of creature was created separately.
  • Some contemporary scholars and Muslim scientists say evolution of plants and animals doesn't conflict with Islam, if it's understood as a process Allah designed and controls.
  • A smaller group accepts human evolution too, but this is a minority view that most scholars reject because of the clear verses about Adam.

Science and faith aren't enemies

The Quran invites people to study creation and reflect on it. Muslim civilization produced great scientists in medicine, astronomy and biology. Many Muslims today work in biology and medicine and use evolutionary science in their research.

The real issue isn't science; it's the philosophy some people attach to it, the claim that there's no Creator. That belief is what Islam rejects.

If you're still unsure

You don't have to settle every scientific question to be a good Muslim. Your core belief is in Allah, His messengers and the Day of Judgment. It's fine to say "Allah knows best" about details you haven't figured out.
