Can I keep my dog after becoming Muslim?
Yes, you don't have to give up your dog. Islam allows dogs for guarding, herding, hunting and real needs, and it requires kindness to every animal. Most scholars discourage keeping a dog inside the house purely as a pet, and dog saliva should be washed off before you pray. Many converts keep their dogs and simply adjust a few habits.
What Islam actually says about dogs
Nothing in the Quran calls dogs evil. The Quran even mentions a dog in the story of the young believers who hid in a cave, loyally guarding them at the entrance.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also told the story of a man whom God forgave because he gave water to a thirsty dog (Sahih al-Bukhari 2363). Being cruel to an animal is a sin. Being kind to one is rewarded.
The rules that do exist are about two things: where the dog lives and its saliva.
The two rules that matter
- Dogs inside the home. One hadith says angels of mercy don't enter a house with a dog in it (Sahih al-Bukhari 3322). Another says keeping a dog without a real need reduces a person's reward (Sahih al-Bukhari 2322). That's why most scholars prefer a dog to live in the yard, a porch or a separate area, unless there's a need such as guarding or assistance.
- Saliva. Most scholars consider dog saliva ritually impure. If a dog licks a bowl, wash it seven times, the first time with soil (Sahih Muslim 279). If it licks your hands or clothes, wash that spot before you pray.
Do all scholars agree?
Not completely, and that's worth knowing. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools are the strictest and treat the whole dog as impure. The Hanafi school says only the saliva is impure, not the fur. The Maliki school, common in North and West Africa, considers a living dog pure.
One thing everyone agrees on: petting a dog does not break your wudu. At most, you wash the spot that got wet.
- You don't have to give your dog away. Never abandon or mistreat it.
- Guard dogs, working dogs and service dogs are allowed in every school.
- Most scholars prefer the dog to stay out of your main living space.
- Wash off saliva before prayer. Touching a dry dog is fine.
What converts usually do
- Keep one clean prayer spot or room that the dog doesn't enter.
- Move the dog's bed out of the bedroom, to a mudroom, porch or yard, when that's practical.
- Keep a separate set of clothes for prayer.
- If they decide to rehome the dog, they take time to find it a loving home.
Your dog isn't a barrier between you and Allah. Caring for it well is part of your faith.
