Can I pay zakat monthly?

Yes, as advance payments. Most scholars allow paying zakat before it's due, so you can spread it monthly through the year leading up to your zakat date. On that date, calculate what you actually owe and pay any balance. If you paid too much, the extra counts as sadaqah.

Advance payment is allowed

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ's uncle al-Abbas asked about paying his zakat before it was due, and the Prophet gave him permission (Sunan Abi Dawud 1624). Based on this, the Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools allow paying zakat early once you own wealth above the nisab. The Maliki school is stricter and generally allows it only a short time before the due date. See Can I pay zakat early?

How monthly zakat works

  • Estimate: use last year's zakat as a guide, for example €600.
  • Divide: €600 ÷ 12 = €50 a month to a zakat fund.
  • Settle: on your zakat date, calculate the real amount. If it's €660, pay the remaining €60. If it's €550, the extra €50 becomes sadaqah, or you can count it toward next year (many scholars allow this).

Keep a simple record so you know how much you've paid as zakat.

What about after the due date?

Paying monthly before zakat is due is fine. Spreading out zakat that's already due over many months is different, because most scholars say zakat should be paid promptly once due; it belongs to the poor. If you truly can't pay a large sum at once, for example after discovering several missed years, talk to a scholar about a short, committed plan. See What if I forgot to pay zakat for years?

A practical setup

Many Muslim charities offer a monthly zakat option by direct debit. Choose a dedicated zakat fund so the money only reaches eligible people. Your intention when setting it up, that these payments are zakat, is what counts. You don't need to renew it every month. See How do I choose a trustworthy charity for my zakat?
