Can I pray with Muslims if I'm not Muslim yet?

You can join in to learn, but the prayer itself is an act of worship for Muslims. Many mosques let visitors stand at the back, watch or follow the movements, and nobody will push you away. If you feel drawn to pray, you can also talk to God in your own words anytime, without being Muslim yet.

Visitors in the mosque

Non-Muslims have been in mosques since the Prophet's time. A man named Thumama was kept in the Prophet's mosque, saw the Muslims praying, and later took a bath and accepted Islam (Sahih al-Bukhari 462). Seeing the prayer up close can be moving.

Can you stand in the row?

The formal prayer (salah) is valid only from a Muslim, because it begins with faith. But standing at the back, copying the movements to learn, or quietly sitting nearby isn't forbidden. Most imams are relaxed about it. To avoid confusion, it's polite to tell someone, "I'm not Muslim yet, can I follow along at the back?"

The Prophet ﷺ taught his companions by example: "Pray as you have seen me praying" (Sahih al-Bukhari 631). Watching is how everyone learns.

You can always talk to God

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ "And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me." Quran 2:186

Personal prayer (dua) is open to everyone. You can ask God for guidance in any language, at any time. Many converts say this was their real first step.

Tips for your first time

  • Dress modestly: long sleeves and trousers; women may be asked to cover their hair.
  • Take off your shoes before the prayer area.
  • Don't walk in front of people praying.
  • Silence your phone.
