Can I still celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day as a Muslim?

It depends on which scholars you follow. Some scholars say Muslims shouldn't adopt any yearly "day" that isn't from Islam. Others say Mother's Day and Father's Day are cultural, not religious, so giving your parents a card or flowers is simply kindness. Everyone agrees on one thing: in Islam, honoring your parents is a daily duty.

Honoring parents is huge in Islam

The Quran places kindness to parents right after worshipping Allah:

وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَـٰنًا "And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be good to your parents." Quran 17:23

When a man asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who deserved his best companionship, he answered "Your mother" three times, and then "your father" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5971).

The stricter view

When the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina, people had two festival days from before Islam. He said Allah had replaced them with something better: the two Eids (Sunan Abi Dawud 1134). Based on this, some scholars say Muslims shouldn't mark other annual celebrations, including Mother's Day and Father's Day, and should honor parents all year instead.

The more lenient view

Other scholars point out that these days have no religious rituals or beliefs. They see a card or a lunch for your mom as an act of kindness that happens to fall on a certain date, not a festival. This view is common among scholars living in Europe and the USA, where skipping the day can genuinely hurt non-Muslim parents.

A balanced approach many converts take

  • Don't treat it as a religious holiday or "celebration."
  • If your parents expect a call, card or visit, many converts give it, simply as kindness.
  • Show love on other days too, so it's clear your care isn't tied to a calendar.
  • Make Eid a special day for your parents as well, with gifts and a visit.

Your parents aren't Muslim?

That doesn't reduce your duty to them at all. Kindness, visits, phone calls and help in old age are all part of your faith. See Can I still hug my non-Muslim parents after becoming Muslim?

Key points
  • Scholars differ on Mother's Day and Father's Day.
  • Some say avoid; others allow it as simple kindness.
  • Honoring parents is a daily duty in Islam.
  • Your mother has a special right to your kindness.
Tip: Pick a random day this month to surprise your mom or dad. A visit "for no reason" often means more than any card.
