Can I still eat at McDonald's as a Muslim?

The meat question

For meat to be halal, the animal has to be slaughtered in the Islamic way. McDonald's in the USA, UK and most of Europe doesn't use certified halal meat. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that between the clearly halal and the clearly haram there are doubtful matters, and whoever avoids them protects their religion (Sahih al-Bukhari 52). That's why most Muslims in the West avoid the meat items.

What's usually okay

• Fish sandwich: fish doesn't need slaughter. Some Muslims ask whether it's fried in the same oil as meat; others don't mind.
• Fries: in the UK, they're listed as suitable for vegetarians. In the USA, they contain "natural beef flavor," so many Muslims avoid them there.
• Drinks, coffee, milkshakes and ice cream: generally fine.
• Salads and veggie options: fine, without bacon or meat.

Menus and recipes change, so check your country's official ingredients list online.

Watch out for pork and bacon

Some menu items contain bacon or sausage, and a few seasonal items are pork. Breakfast menus especially. Always read the description, and ask for no bacon when needed. If you're not sure about an item, the staff can usually show you the ingredients list.

In Muslim-majority countries

In places like Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan and the Gulf states, McDonald's uses halal meat. So if you travel, you can usually eat the full menu there.

Halal fast food alternatives

Many cities in Europe and the USA have halal burger and fried chicken places, and some international chains have halal branches in Muslim neighborhoods. A quick search or a halal food app will show what's near you.
