Can I still say "Oh my God"?

Yes, generally. "God" is simply the English word for Allah, and calling on Him is a good thing. What Islam discourages is using His name carelessly, as a curse or a joke. Many new Muslims slowly swap "Oh my God" for short Islamic phrases that say what they actually mean.

"God" and "Allah" are the same

Allah is the Arabic word for God. Arabic-speaking Christians use it too. Saying "God" in English isn't wrong, and Muslim scholars use it all the time when they write in English.

وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا "To Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call on Him by them." Quran 7:180

When it becomes a problem

The issue is respect, not the word itself. Using God's name as a swear word, in a curse or to mock something isn't okay. Many scholars also consider using it as constant filler ("OMG, this sandwich") disrespectful, because God's name deserves more weight than that.

For most converts, it's a habit, not rebellion. But it's a habit worth upgrading.

Easy swaps

SituationSayMeaning
Something amazingSubhanAllahGlory be to God
Admiring something goodMashaAllahGod has willed it
Something scaryA'udhu billahI seek refuge in God
A mistake or "oh no" momentAstaghfirullahI ask God's forgiveness
Bad news or a lossInna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'unWe belong to God and to Him we return
Asking for helpYa AllahO God

The nice part is that these phrases turn a reflex into a small moment of remembering God.

What about "Jesus Christ!" or "God bless you"?

Jesus (Isa) is one of the greatest prophets in Islam, so using his name as a curse is disrespectful too. That habit is worth dropping.

"God bless you," on the other hand, is a beautiful thing to say. When someone sneezes, Muslims say "Yarhamuk Allah" (may God have mercy on you), but "God bless you" carries the same kind wish. "Thank God" is also fine, and it's basically what "Alhamdulillah" means.

Don't overthink it

You'll still slip, especially in the first months. That's normal. You also don't need to correct coworkers or family who say "OMG." Focus on your own habits and let them change gradually.

Key points
  • "God" and "Allah" refer to the same God.
  • Calling on God with respect is good.
  • Avoid using His name in curses, jokes or as filler.
  • Short Islamic phrases make a great replacement.
Tip: Pick one phrase a week, starting with "SubhanAllah" for surprises. In a month, most of your "Oh my Gods" will have a new home.
