Can I still use my credit card after becoming Muslim?
It depends on how you use it. Interest (riba) is forbidden in Islam. Many scholars allow a credit card if you pay the full balance every month so you never pay interest. Others prefer a debit card to stay completely clear. If you already carry a balance, the priority is paying it off as fast as you can.
Why interest is such a big deal
The Quran draws a clear line between trade and interest:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ "cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnesses," and said they are all equal (Sahih Muslim 1598). So paying interest isn't a minor issue, even though it's normal in Western life.
Two views on credit cards
- Allowed with care: many contemporary scholars say a credit card is just a payment tool. If you always pay in full before the due date, you never pay interest, so there's no riba.
- Better to avoid: other scholars point out that the card agreement itself includes an interest clause, and one missed payment means paying riba. They recommend a debit card instead.
If you keep a credit card, set up an automatic full payment every month.
Already in credit card debt?
Many converts arrive with existing debt. Don't panic. About the past, the Quran says whoever stops "may have what is past" (Quran 2:275). Your job now:
- Stop adding new purchases to the card.
- Pay off the balance as fast as you reasonably can.
- Many scholars allow moving the debt to a 0% balance transfer to stop the interest.
- Talk to a free debt advice service if it feels overwhelming.
Other things to watch
- Cash advances: charge interest from day one. Avoid them.
- Buy now, pay later: often interest-free if paid on time, but late fees and interest can kick in.
- Cashback and points: many scholars allow these rewards.
- Store cards and car finance: check whether interest is involved.
Some countries, like the UK, have Islamic banks and halal finance options. In the USA, a few Islamic finance companies offer home and car financing too.
