Can I take off my hijab at a women-only gym?
Yes, if no men can see you. A women-only gym or class is one of the easiest places to work out comfortably without hijab. Before you take it off, check for male trainers, cleaners or maintenance staff, security cameras and windows facing the street, and keep the changing room modest too.
Women-only spaces
Women may see each other's hair and arms, since the Quran includes "their women" among those who can see a woman's adornment (Quran 24:31). So a ladies-only gym, swim session or fitness class lets you wear normal sports clothes: T-shirt, leggings, hair tied back. Many Muslim women find these spaces make exercise far more enjoyable.
What to check first
- Staff: are any trainers, cleaners or managers men? Do men come in to fix equipment?
- Windows: can people outside see in, especially at street level?
- Cameras: who watches the CCTV? Many gyms have cameras in workout areas; some are monitored by men.
- Timetables: some "women-only" hours share a space with mixed sessions before and after.
- Phones: other members filming workouts for social media.
If cameras are monitored by men, many scholars advise keeping a sports hijab on, especially since footage can be stored or shared.
Changing rooms
Even among women, the Prophet ﷺ said a woman should not look at the private parts of another woman (Sahih Muslim 338). So use a cubicle or a towel when changing, avoid walking around undressed, and lower your gaze. This is one area where Muslim women are often more modest than gym culture expects, and that's fine.
Mixed gyms
In a mixed gym, keep your hijab and modest sportswear on. Loose long tops, track pants or leggings under a long tunic, and a sports hijab work well. See How do I wear hijab for sports? and Can I still wear shorts to the gym as a Muslim?
- Women-only gyms allow you to remove hijab.
- Check for male staff, windows and cameras.
- Change modestly, even among women.
- In mixed gyms, wear a sports hijab.
