Can Muslim women wear high heels?
Yes, in general. There's no prohibition on heels. The Quran's concern is about walking in a way meant to draw attention to yourself, so many scholars advise against loud, clicking heels worn to turn heads. Comfortable, quiet heels with a modest outfit are fine, and any heels are fine at women-only events.
Allowed in principle
Shoes are part of ordinary clothing, and the basic rule for clothing is that it's allowed unless there's evidence otherwise. Heels have been worn by women in many cultures for centuries. If your outfit is modest and your intention isn't to attract men's attention, heels aren't a problem.
The stamping verse
In the Prophet's time, some women wore anklets and stamped their feet so the jingling would draw men's attention. Scholars extend this to anything similar: sounds or movements meant to make men notice you. Loud clicking heels in a quiet office or a strut designed to turn heads fall under this spirit. So:
- Choose heels with rubber tips or a softer sole.
- Walk naturally, not to perform.
- Skip anklets with bells in public.
Health and comfort
Islam forbids harming yourself: "do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction" (Quran 2:195). Very high heels worn every day can damage feet, knees and backs. Many scholars mention this as a reason to keep heels moderate. Block heels, wedges and low heels are kinder options.
At women-only events
At weddings, parties and gatherings with only women, wear whatever heels you like. See Can I take off my hijab at an all-women party? and What can I wear at my wedding as a Muslim bride?
- Heels aren't forbidden.
- Avoid noise or walking meant to draw attention.
- Look after your health with moderate heels.
- Women-only events: anything goes.
