Can my neck or ears show when I wear hijab?
No. Your neck and ears are part of what hijab covers in front of non-mahram men. Only the face (and hands) may show, according to most scholars. It's one of the most common slip-ups, but also one of the easiest to fix with an underscarf or a snood.
Why they're covered
The Quran tells women to draw their head covers over their chests (Quran 24:31), which naturally covers the neck and ears on the way down. Scholars agree the neck isn't part of the "face and hands" that may show. Ears are part of the head, so they're covered with the hair.
Common slip-ups
- Scarf tied behind the neck, leaving the throat bare.
- Turban or wrap styles that sit high on the head.
- Scarves pushed behind the ears to hear better.
- Hairline or neck showing when you bend or turn.
Don't stress if your scarf slips by accident. Just fix it when you notice. Allah doesn't hold you accountable for honest mistakes (Quran 2:286).
Practical fixes
- Underscarf (cap): a tube or ninja-style underscarf covers the hairline, ears and neck and stops slipping.
- Snood or neck cover: great with turban styles.
- Turtleneck: a thin roll-neck under your top covers the neck if your scarf moves.
- Magnets and pins: keep the scarf in place under the chin.
Earrings and headphones
Earrings go under the hijab, since jewelry is adornment (Quran 24:31). Over-ear headphones can sit on top of your scarf, and earbuds can go under it. Many sports and commuter hijabs have thin fabric over the ears so you can still hear traffic. See Can Muslim women wear earrings and necklaces? and Can I wear a turban-style hijab?
