Do I have to accept polygamy as a Muslim woman?

No, you don't have to accept it in your own marriage. As a Muslim, you accept that polygyny is permitted in Islam under strict conditions. But permitted doesn't mean required. You're free to refuse a man who plans more wives, and many scholars allow you to add a condition to your marriage contract that he won't take another wife.

What Islam permits

فَٱنكِحُوا۟ مَا طَابَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ مَثْنَىٰ وَثُلَـٰثَ وَرُبَـٰعَ ۖ فَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا۟ فَوَٰحِدَةً "Then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one." Quran 4:3

Islam allows a man up to four wives, but only if he can treat them justly in time, housing and spending. The Quran itself points to one wife when there's a risk of injustice.

Justice is a heavy duty

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "When a man has two wives and he is inclined to one of them, he will come on the Day of resurrection with a side hanging down" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2133). Polygyny isn't a casual option. A man who can't support or treat two families fairly shouldn't do it.

Believing vs. accepting for yourself

Believing that something is allowed in Islam is part of faith. Wanting it in your own life is a personal choice. You can believe polygyny is permitted and still say "not for me." Many devout Muslim women do.

It's also natural to feel jealous or hurt at the idea. The Prophet's own wives felt jealousy, and he treated it with understanding, not blame.

Protecting yourself

  • Ask before marriage: "Do you intend to take another wife?"
  • Add a condition to the nikah: no second wife, or you gain the right to divorce if he does. The Hanbali school considers this binding. See Is a prenup allowed in Islam?
  • Know the law: polygamous marriages aren't legally recognized in the UK, Europe or the USA, which can leave a second wife without legal protection.
  • Know your options: if a husband treats you unjustly, you can seek divorce. See Can a Muslim woman ask for a divorce?
Key points
  • Polygyny is permitted, not required.
  • It comes with strict conditions of justice.
  • You can refuse it for your own marriage.
  • A no-second-wife condition can be added to the contract.
Tip: Put the question on your list of things to discuss before engagement. It's much easier to talk about honestly now than to discover it later.
