Do I have to pay zakat as a new Muslim?
Yes, once you qualify. Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, and it applies to every adult Muslim whose savings reach a minimum amount (the nisab) and stay there for one lunar year. As a new Muslim, your first zakat year starts after your shahada. You don't owe anything for the years before you became Muslim.
Who has to pay zakat
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said Islam is built on five pillars, and paying zakat is the third, after the shahada and prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 8). Zakat is due from a Muslim who:
- owns wealth at or above the nisab (the value of about 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver),
- has held it for one full lunar year (about 354 days),
- owns it fully, beyond what they owe right now.
The amount is 2.5% of your zakatable wealth. Most people never pay anything close to what they fear.
Your zakat year starts after your shahada
Islam wipes the slate clean. Scholars agree that converts don't make up zakat for the years before Islam. Your clock starts on the day you became Muslim if your savings were already above the nisab, or on the day they first reach it afterward. Note that date. One lunar year later, check your wealth again and pay if you're still above the nisab.
What counts and what doesn't
- Counts: cash, bank balances, gold and silver, stocks, crypto, business stock, money you're owed that will be repaid.
- Doesn't count: your home, car, furniture, clothes, phone and other things you use.
Retirement accounts and jewelry have scholarly differences. See How do I calculate my zakat? and How much money do I need before I have to pay zakat?
Take it step by step
If you're a student or living paycheck to paycheck, you may not owe zakat at all, and you might even be eligible to receive it. See Can I receive zakat as a new Muslim? If you do qualify, a mosque or a reputable zakat calculator can walk you through it the first time. After that, it becomes a simple yearly habit.
- Zakat is a pillar of Islam for Muslims above the nisab.
- Your first zakat year starts after your shahada.
- There's no back payment for years before Islam.
- It's 2.5% of savings, not of income or belongings.
