Do I have to pray while on my period?

No. Women don't pray during their period, and they don't have to make up those prayers afterward. This is a mercy from Allah, not a punishment. Fasting is also paused, but missed Ramadan fasts are made up later. Once your period ends, you take a full bath (ghusl) and start praying again.

No prayer, and no make-up

A woman once asked Aisha whether women should make up prayers missed during menstruation. Aisha replied that in the Prophet's ﷺ time, a woman on her period "was not required to complete them" (Sahih Muslim 335).

All scholars agree on this. You don't owe Allah those prayers, and you haven't done anything wrong by not praying. In fact, praying during your period isn't valid, so stopping is the correct choice.

Fasting is different

  • Prayer: paused during your period, never made up.
  • Ramadan fasts: paused during your period, made up later in the year.

Scholars explain that prayers come five times a day, so making them up would be a heavy burden, while missed fasts are only a few days a year.

When your period ends

  1. Make sure the bleeding has fully stopped.
  2. Take a ghusl: intend to purify yourself, then wash your whole body, including your hair.
  3. Pray the next prayer. Many scholars say if your period ends before a prayer's time runs out, you should pray that prayer too.

If you're unsure about irregular bleeding or spotting, ask a knowledgeable sister or scholar, since the details can vary.

Staying connected to Allah

Not praying doesn't mean being cut off. During your period you can:

  • Make dua as much as you like.
  • Do dhikr (remembrance), like "SubhanAllah" and "Alhamdulillah."
  • Listen to Quran recitation.
  • Read Islamic books and learn.

Scholars differ on reciting or touching the Quran during menstruation. Many allow reading from a phone or with a barrier; ask about the view you follow.

A note for new Muslim women

Some converts feel guilty or "less Muslim" during these days. There's no reason to. Following Allah's rules, including the rule to pause, is itself obedience. For other prayer questions, see Can I pray with nail polish on?
