Do I need a wali to get married as a Muslim convert woman?

Yes, according to most scholars. The majority (Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali) say a woman's nikah needs a wali, a guardian who represents her. Your non-Muslim father can't be your wali for an Islamic marriage, so an imam, a Muslim judge or a trusted Muslim community leader usually takes the role. The Hanafi school allows an adult woman to marry without one, under conditions.

The evidence

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "There is no marriage except with a Wali" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1101). He also said that the marriage of a woman who marries without the consent of her guardians is void (Sunan Abi Dawud 2083).

The Hanafi school understands these narrations differently and holds that an adult, sane woman can contract her own marriage, though having a wali is still recommended.

What a wali is for

A wali isn't there to control you. His job is to protect your interests: check the man's character and faith, negotiate the mahr and conditions, and make sure you're treated with respect. Your own consent is still required. The Prophet ﷺ said a woman shouldn't be married without her permission (Sahih al-Bukhari 5136).

Who can be your wali as a convert?

  • A Muslim male relative, such as a father, brother or uncle who has also become Muslim.
  • If you have none: a Muslim judge or, in Western countries, an imam or recognized Islamic center usually acts as your wali.
  • Not: your non-Muslim father, even if he's kind and supportive. He can still attend, be honored and give his blessing.

Choosing well

Pick someone you trust, who knows you and will ask the hard questions. Many convert women build a relationship with an imam or a respected family at the mosque before marriage comes up. Avoid men who offer themselves as your "wali" online without any community standing.

What if your wali refuses?

A wali can't block a suitable marriage without a valid reason. If that happens, you can go to another imam or an Islamic council. See What if my parents won't let me marry the person I want?

Key points
  • Most scholars require a wali for a woman's nikah.
  • The Hanafi school allows marriage without one.
  • A non-Muslim father can't be the wali.
  • An imam or Islamic center can act as your wali.
Tip: Ask your mosque early how they handle walis for converts. Knowing the process before you meet someone makes everything calmer later.
