Do I pay zakat on gold jewelry I wear?
Scholars differ. The Hanafi school says yes: gold and silver jewelry is zakatable once it reaches the nisab, even if you wear it. The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools say no zakat is due on jewelry worn normally by women. All agree that gold kept as savings or investment is zakatable.
The Hanafi view: yes
A woman came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with her daughter, who wore two heavy gold bangles. He asked, "Do you pay zakat on them?" When she said no, he warned her of bangles of fire on the Day of Judgment (Sunan Abi Dawud 1563, graded hasan). Based on this and similar narrations, the Hanafi school says gold and silver are always zakatable, whatever form they take. Many scholars recommend this view as the more cautious one.
The majority view: no, for normal use
The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools say jewelry a woman wears in a normal, customary way is like clothing, a personal-use item, so there's no zakat on it. They point to reports that some Companions, including Aisha, did not pay zakat on the jewelry worn by women in their care. These schools still require zakat if jewelry is:
- kept as savings or investment, or rarely worn,
- far beyond what is customary,
- gold worn by men, which isn't allowed. See Can Muslim men wear gold rings?
Gold kept as savings
Gold coins, bars and jewelry stored "for a rainy day" are zakatable in every school. Add their current value to your other savings on your zakat date. See How do I calculate my zakat?
How to calculate it
- Weigh the gold and note its purity (for example 18k = 75% gold).
- Multiply the pure gold weight by today's gold price.
- Add it to your other zakatable wealth; pay 2.5% if you're above the nisab.
Use the scrap value of the metal, not the shop price with design and markup. Follow the view of the school you follow, or ask your imam. See Do I have to follow a madhab after becoming Muslim?
- Hanafi: zakat is due on worn gold jewelry.
- Majority: no zakat on jewelry worn normally.
- Gold kept as savings is zakatable for all.
- Calculate by pure gold weight at today's price.
