Do my children have to become Muslim if I do?
It depends on their age. Most scholars say young children follow the religion of their Muslim parent, so you raise them as Muslims, gently and with love. Teenagers and adult children make their own choice, and Islam says there's no compulsion in religion. Either way, your love for them doesn't change.
Every child is born on the fitrah
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Every child is born with a true faith of Islam (i.e. to worship none but Allah Alone) and his parents convert him to Judaism or Christianity or Magianism" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1385).
Muslims believe children are born with a natural sense of God. As a Muslim parent, you help that grow.
Young children
Most scholars say minor children are considered Muslim when one parent is Muslim. In practice, that means:
- Teach them about Allah and the prophets with stories, not pressure.
- Let them pray next to you when they want to. Kids love copying parents.
- Make Islam joyful: Eid gifts, Ramadan lights, special food.
- Children aren't accountable for prayer and fasting until puberty.
Teens and adult children
You can't force faith into anyone's heart. Older children may be curious, skeptical, or even upset by your conversion. Give them time. Share when they ask, listen without judging, and keep loving them the same way. Many grown children become Muslim years later, after watching how their parent changed.
When the other parent isn't Muslim
If you're divorced, separated, or married to a non-Muslim, this gets complicated, emotionally and legally. Some practical advice:
- Avoid making religion a fight in front of the kids.
- Agree on shared values: honesty, kindness, respect.
- Know that custody and religious upbringing are governed by your country's family law.
- Get advice from both a scholar and, if needed, a family lawyer.

Your example is the lesson
Children learn more from what you do than from what you say. A parent who is calmer, more honest and more patient after becoming Muslim teaches Islam better than any lecture.

- Young children follow the Muslim parent, according to most scholars.
- Raise them gently, with joy, not pressure.
- Older children choose for themselves.
- Your example matters more than your words.
