Is hijab a sign of oppression?
No, not in Islam's teaching. Hijab is meant to be an act of worship a woman chooses for Allah, not a tool for men to control her. Forcing it on someone goes against Islam's own principles. Sadly, some women are pressured, and that's wrong, but millions of women, including many Western converts, wear it freely and with conviction.
No compulsion in religion
Worship only counts with a sincere intention. The Prophet ﷺ said that deeds are judged by intentions (Sahih al-Bukhari 1). A hijab worn only out of fear of a father, husband or state is not what Allah asks for. Islam asks for a heart that chooses Him.
Men have rules too
Modesty in Islam isn't only for women. The verse right before the hijab verse tells believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity (Quran 24:30). Men have their own dress rules, from covering navel to knee to avoiding silk and gold. The point is a society where people are valued for their character, not their bodies. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah does not look at your faces and wealth, but at your hearts and deeds (Sahih Muslim 2564).
Why many women choose it
Women who wear hijab often describe it very differently from how it's portrayed:
- Worship: a daily, visible act of obedience to Allah.
- Identity: a proud sign of being Muslim.
- Freedom: being judged on what they say, not how they look.
- Peace: stepping out of the pressure of beauty standards and fashion cycles.
Many converts in Europe and the USA wear it against their families' wishes, which is hard to describe as oppression.
When it is forced
In some homes and countries, women are made to cover through threats or violence. That's real, and Muslims shouldn't deny it. But forcing a woman is a failure to follow Islam's teaching, not a picture of it. Equally, banning hijab and forcing women to remove it also takes away a woman's choice. - Hijab is meant as a free act of worship.
- Forcing it contradicts "no compulsion in religion."
- Men are given modesty rules too.
- Many women, including converts, choose it freely.
