Is it a sin to have a crush on someone as a Muslim?
No. Having feelings for someone isn't a sin in itself. Attraction is natural and not fully in your control. What matters in Islam is what you do with those feelings: lower your gaze, avoid being alone together, and if it's serious, consider a halal path toward marriage.
Feelings aren't sins
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Allah has overlooked my followers the evil thoughts that occur to their minds, as long as such thoughts are not put into action or uttered" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5269). A crush that comes into your heart isn't something you'll be blamed for.
Where the line is
Islam guards feelings by guarding actions. The Quran tells believing men to "reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts" (Quran 24:30), and believing women are told the same in the next verse.
The Prophet ﷺ told Ali: "Do not give a second look, Ali, for while you are not to blame for the first, you have no right to the second" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2149). In practice, that means:
- Don't keep staring or scrolling through their photos.
- Avoid private one-on-one time together.
- Keep messages and conversations respectful and purposeful.
- Don't let fantasies take over your thoughts.
Turn it into something halal
The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is nothing like marriage, for two who love one another" (Sunan Ibn Majah 1847). If you're serious and ready, you can:
- Talk to a trusted friend, imam or family member who can approach the person or their family.
- Get to know each other with a chaperone present.
- Pray istikhara (the prayer for guidance) to ask Allah for help.

If it's not possible
Sometimes the person isn't Muslim, is married, or marriage just isn't realistic yet. In that case, gently step back. Keep busy, spend less time around them, and ask Allah to fill your heart with what's good for you. Feelings fade more easily when they aren't fed.
- A crush on its own isn't sinful.
- Lower your gaze and avoid private time together.
- Marriage is the halal path for serious feelings.
- Step back if marriage isn't possible.
