Is it haram to tell jokes?

No. Joking is allowed in Islam, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself joked with his companions. The conditions are simple: don't lie, don't mock people or religion, and don't overdo it. Humor that's kind and truthful is part of good character.

The Prophet ﷺ joked too

His companions once said: "O Messenger of Allah! You joke with us?" He replied: "Indeed I do not say except what is true" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1990).

He smiled often, played with children and made light-hearted comments, always without lying. So being funny isn't against Islam; being dishonest or hurtful is.

A smile is even counted as charity in Islam. Lightening the mood for a stressed friend or making your family laugh at dinner can be a good deed.

Jokes that cross the line

  • Lying to make people laugh: the Prophet ﷺ said: "Woe to him who tells things, speaking falsely, to make people laugh thereby. Woe to him! Woe to him!" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4990).
  • Mocking Allah, the Quran, prophets or religion, even in fun. This is very serious.
  • Making fun of people for their looks, race, disability or background.
  • Crude or sexual humor.
  • Pranks that scare or hurt someone.

What about April Fools' and pranks?

Pranks based on lying, like fake news or tricking someone into believing something false, fall under the warning above. Harmless surprises that don't involve lies or fear are different. Many scholars advise skipping April Fools' traditions that depend on deception.

Comedy shows and stand-up

Watching comedy is judged by its content. Clean comedy that doesn't mock religion or rely on crude jokes is generally fine. There are even Muslim comedians who make clean, faith-friendly shows. For other speech questions, see Is it a sin to swear as a Muslim?

Balance

Islam warns against laughing so much that the heart becomes careless. A good balance is to enjoy humor and smiles, while keeping your seriousness for prayer, important conversations and moments that need it.

Key points
  • Joking is allowed; the Prophet ﷺ joked.
  • Jokes must be truthful.
  • Never mock religion or hurt people.
  • Keep humor balanced, not constant.
Tip: Before telling a joke, ask: "Is it true, and would the person it's about laugh too?" If both answers are yes, go for it.
