Will my non-Muslim parents go to hell?
It depends on things only Allah knows. Islam teaches that no human can say a specific person is going to Hell. Allah alone judges, with perfect justice and mercy, and He knows what each person truly heard and understood about Islam. Your job isn't to decide their fate, but to love them, pray for their guidance, and show them Islam at its best.
Only Allah judges
Muslims believe that those who clearly receive the message of Islam and knowingly reject it are accountable for that choice. But whether your mom or dad truly received that message, how they understood it, and what was in their hearts are things no one but Allah can know.
The Quran also makes a striking promise:
Many scholars explain that people who never heard Islam clearly, or only heard a distorted version of it, will be treated differently on the Day of Judgment. Allah says He doesn't wrong anyone, not even by the weight of an atom (Quran 4:40).
Even the Prophet ﷺ felt this pain
This question isn't new. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ visited his mother's grave and wept, and the people around him wept too (Sahih Muslim 976). He loved his family deeply, including relatives who didn't accept Islam. Feeling sad or worried about your parents is not a weakness of faith. It's a sign of love.
What you can do while they're alive
- Pray for their guidance: when people asked the Prophet ﷺ to curse a tribe that rejected him, he prayed instead: "O Allah! Give guidance to the people of Daus" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2937).
- Be the best version of yourself around them: your kindness is often the clearest message they'll ever receive.
- Answer their questions gently when they ask, without pressure.
- Keep the relationship warm. See Can I still hug my non-Muslim parents after becoming Muslim?
Don't carry what isn't yours
Some converts live with constant fear about their parents' fate. Islam doesn't ask you to carry that weight. Guidance is in Allah's hands, and He loves your parents more than you do. Do your part, then trust Him.
If this worry keeps you up at night, talk to a kind, knowledgeable imam. You're not the first convert to ask, and you won't be the last.
- No human can declare a specific person bound for Hell.
- Allah judges with full knowledge, justice and mercy.
- Pray for your parents' guidance while they're alive.
- Your kindness is your strongest message.
