Can I donate to an animal shelter as a Muslim?

Yes. Kindness to animals is rewarded in Islam, and supporting an animal shelter or rescue is a good form of sadaqah. The Prophet ﷺ told of a man who was forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog. This kind of giving isn't zakat, though, since zakat is reserved for people in need.

Kindness to animals is rewarded

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told the story of a man who was walking, felt thirsty, and drank from a well. Coming out, he saw a dog panting and licking mud from thirst. He climbed back down, filled his shoe with water and gave the dog a drink. Allah thanked him and forgave him. The Companions asked if there was reward for serving animals, and the Prophet said there is a reward for serving any living being (Sahih al-Bukhari 2363).

Dogs too

Some Muslims hesitate to support dog rescues, because most scholars discourage keeping dogs indoors as pets. But helping a dog in distress is clearly rewarded, as the hadith shows. Funding a shelter's food, vet care or rehoming work is kindness, not a breach of any rule. If you want to know more about dogs at home, see Can I keep my dog after becoming Muslim?

Not zakat

Zakat has eight human categories in Quran 9:60, so it can't go to animal charities. Give from your sadaqah instead. Many Muslims set aside a small part of their giving for animal welfare alongside human causes. See What is the difference between zakat and sadaqah? When choosing a shelter, you might prefer one whose policies on putting animals down match your values; it's worth asking.

Other ways to help animals

  • Volunteer at a shelter: walking dogs, cleaning, socializing cats.
  • Foster an animal temporarily, if your situation allows.
  • Put out water for birds and stray cats in hot weather.
  • Donate old towels and blankets to shelters.
  • Treat animals in your care gently; the Prophet ﷺ condemned cruelty to animals.

Tip: In summer, leave a shallow bowl of water outside for birds and strays. It's one of the simplest daily charities, straight from the Prophet's story.
