Can I keep my non-Muslim friends after becoming Muslim?

Yes. Becoming Muslim doesn't mean dropping your friends. Islam encourages kindness and fairness toward non-Muslims who treat you well. What may change is how you spend time together: you'll skip activities like drinking or clubbing, and you'll want some Muslim friends too, to support your new faith.

Kindness is encouraged

لَّا يَنْهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَـٰتِلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُم مِّن دِيَـٰرِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes, from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them." Quran 60:8

Your friends who supported you before Islam deserve loyalty and good treatment. Your character might even be the best introduction to Islam they ever get.

What might change

  • Nights out: bars, clubs and parties with alcohol aren't for you anymore. See Can I go to a bar with friends if I only drink soda?
  • Opposite-gender friends: Islam sets boundaries, like avoiding being alone together and keeping conversations respectful.
  • Jokes and topics that mock religion or are crude.

Suggest alternatives: coffee, sports, games, hiking, cooking together or watching films at home.

Choose company wisely

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said a good companion is like "the musk seller," while a bad one is like "the blacksmith's bellows" that burn your clothes or leave a bad smell (Sahih al-Bukhari 2101).

This applies to everyone, Muslim or not. A non-Muslim friend who respects your faith is a better companion than a Muslim who pulls you into sin. But if a friend constantly mocks your faith or pressures you toward haram, it may be time to step back.

Add Muslim friends too

Converts often feel isolated. Having Muslim friends gives you people to pray with, celebrate Eid with and ask questions. Try convert circles, mosque classes or Muslim student groups. A mix of old and new friends is healthy.

Telling your friends

Some friends will be curious, some confused, some may drift away. Be patient, answer questions honestly and keep showing up as the friend you've always been. For holiday questions, see Can I say Merry Christmas to my coworkers?

Key points
  • You can keep your non-Muslim friends.
  • Islam encourages kindness to them.
  • Change activities, not loyalty.
  • Build Muslim friendships too.
Tip: Invite your closest friends to an iftar during Ramadan. It's a warm way to share your new life with them over good food.
