Can I name my pet after a prophet?

No, scholars advise against it. Names like Muhammad, Isa (Jesus), Musa (Moses) or Ibrahim are deeply respected in Islam, and giving them to animals is seen as disrespectful to the prophets. The same applies to Allah's names. Fun, ordinary pet names are completely fine, and the Prophet ﷺ himself named his animals.

The Prophet ﷺ named his animals

Naming pets is part of the Sunnah. A companion said: "I was a companion rider of the Prophet on a donkey called 'Ufair" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2856). The Prophet ﷺ also "had a she camel called Al Adba" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2872).

So Islam has no problem with giving your cat or dog a name. The question is only which names.

Why prophets' names are different

Muslims love and honor all the prophets. Saying "Muhammad, get off the couch!" or "Musa, stop scratching!" to an animal doesn't fit that respect. Scholars therefore say it's disliked or forbidden to give animals:

  • Names of prophets, like Muhammad, Ahmad, Isa, Musa, Ibrahim, Nuh or Yusuf.
  • Names of Allah, like Rahman or Karim when used as a title of Allah.
  • Names of angels, like Jibril.
  • Names that mock religion or sacred things.

What about Western versions?

Many converts have pets called Moses, Noah or Joseph. Since these are the same prophets, many scholars advise changing the name. Pets adjust to new names quickly, especially with treats. If the pet is old and the name has become just a sound to the family, ask a scholar; at minimum, avoid making jokes with it.

Names that are great

Any normal, respectful name works: Simba, Luna, Pepper, Biscuit, Shadow. Arabic words are popular too:

  • Qamar (moon), Najm (star), Asal (honey).
  • Lulu (pearl), Zaytoon (olive), Bunduq (hazelnut).

Respect beyond the name

Islam values kindness to animals. Naming your pet with love and treating it well both reflect good character. See Can I keep a cat inside my house? If you're wondering about your own name, see Do I have to change my name after becoming Muslim?

Key points
  • Naming pets is fine; the Prophet ﷺ named his animals.
  • Avoid prophets' names for animals.
  • Avoid Allah's names and angels' names too.
  • Choose any respectful, ordinary name.
Tip: If you're renaming a pet, pick a name with a similar sound, like "Moses" to "Moxie." The pet will barely notice the change.
