Do I have to change my name after becoming Muslim?
No. You don't have to change your name when you become Muslim. Most of the Prophet's companions kept the names they had before Islam. A name only needs to change if its meaning is bad or it implies worshipping someone other than God. Taking an Arabic nickname is optional.
What the Prophet ﷺ actually did
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ changed names that had bad meanings. Umar's daughter was named Asiyah, which means "disobedient," and he renamed her Jamilah, "beautiful" (Sahih Muslim 2139).
But he didn't ask people with ordinary names to change them. Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali and thousands of others kept the names their non-Muslim parents gave them.
Which names should change?
- Names meaning "servant of" someone or something other than God.
- Names with clearly bad or offensive meanings.
Almost no common Western name falls into these categories. Michael, Emma, Daniel or Olivia are all fine.
Your name might already be "Islamic"
| English name | Arabic form | Who it refers to |
|---|---|---|
| Mary | Maryam | Mother of Jesus, a chapter of the Quran is named after her |
| Joseph | Yusuf | Prophet |
| David | Dawud | Prophet |
| John | Yahya | Prophet |
| Abraham | Ibrahim | Prophet |
| Jacob | Ya'qub | Prophet |
Keep your family name
Islam places real value on lineage and knowing where you come from:
This verse is about adopted children, but it shows the principle. There's no need to drop your father's name or your surname to "sound more Muslim."
If you'd like a new name anyway
That's completely fine. Pick a name with a good meaning. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The names dearest to Allah are Abdullah and Abd al-Rahman" (Sahih Muslim 2132). Many converts use their new name as a nickname at the mosque and keep their legal name for work and documents.
If you decide to change it legally, there's no rush. Some converts wait a year to see whether the new name really feels like theirs. Changing a passport, bank account and diplomas takes time and money, and Islam doesn't require any of it.
- Changing your name isn't required.
- Only names with bad meanings or false worship must change.
- Many Western names are names of prophets.
- Keep your family name. A new first name is optional.
