Can I pray in jeans?
Yes. Jeans are fine for prayer as long as they're clean and cover what needs to be covered. For men, that means at least from the navel to the knees. For women, it's the whole body except the face and hands, according to most scholars. The main things to watch are your lower back during sujood and jeans that are very tight.
What prayer clothes need
- Clean: free from impurities like urine or blood.
- Covering: the required parts of the body stay covered the whole prayer.
- Not see-through.
For women, covering the hair is part of the prayer's requirements, even when praying alone at home. Many women keep a simple prayer scarf, or a one-piece prayer outfit, next to their prayer mat for this reason.
Scholars understand this verse as a call to dress properly for prayer. Nothing in it requires traditional or Arab clothing. Jeans, chinos and office wear all work.
Watch out in sujood
This is the most common issue. When you bow down, low-rise jeans slide down and a short shirt rides up, leaving your lower back exposed. For men, the area from the navel down must stay covered. If part of it shows, many scholars say the prayer may be affected.
The fix is simple: a longer shirt, tucking it in, or a belt.
Tight and ripped jeans
- Very tight jeans that show the body's shape are disliked for prayer by most scholars.
- For women, many scholars advise wearing a long top, tunic or dress over jeans when praying.
- Ripped jeans can expose skin that should be covered, especially above the knee. Avoid them for prayer, or wear something over them.
Praying at work
You don't need to change into special clothes to pray at work or school. Many converts pray in their normal outfit every day. Some like to keep a long cardigan, a large scarf or a thobe in their bag or locker for extra coverage.
- Jeans are fine if they're clean and cover what's required.
- Make sure your lower back stays covered in sujood.
- Avoid very tight or ripped jeans for prayer.
- No special "prayer clothes" are required.
