Can I still go to Halloween parties as a Muslim?
No, according to most scholars. Halloween has roots in pagan and religious traditions, and Islam asks Muslims not to take part in other faiths' festivals. That doesn't mean you have to be rude to trick-or-treaters. Many scholars say handing out candy to neighborhood kids is fine as simple kindness.
Where Halloween comes from
Halloween grew out of the Celtic festival of Samhain, a night when spirits were believed to walk the earth, and later became All Hallows' Eve in the Christian calendar. Today most people celebrate it just for fun, but the costumes of ghosts, witches and the dead still come from those beliefs.
Why scholars say avoid it
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "He who copies any people is one of them" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4031). Scholars apply this to religious and festival customs that belong to another faith or to old pagan beliefs.
When the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina, people had two days of festivities from pre-Islamic times. He told them: "Allah has substituted for them something better," the two Eids (Sunan Abi Dawud 1134). Muslims have their own celebrations, and they're meant to be joyful. The same reasoning appears in Can I celebrate my birthday after becoming Muslim?
What about trick-or-treaters at your door?
Islam puts huge weight on being a good neighbor. The Prophet ﷺ said that Gabriel kept urging him to treat neighbors kindly, so much that he thought neighbors would be made heirs (Sahih al-Bukhari 6014).
So many scholars say it's fine to give candy to kids who knock, as a kind gesture, without decorating or celebrating yourself. Others prefer to keep the porch light off. Both are reasonable.
Costume parties, work and school
- A Halloween party: best to skip. Politely say you don't celebrate it.
- Work dress-up day: you can come as usual. Most coworkers won't mind.
- Kids at school: talk to the teacher. Many schools offer a non-Halloween activity.
- A costume party any other time: generally fine, as long as the costumes are modest and not religious or occult.
Fun alternatives
Autumn is great without Halloween: pumpkin picking, apple cider, a harvest dinner with friends, or a cozy movie night. Many mosques also hold fall festivals for kids. For more on non-Muslim holidays, see Can I say "Merry Christmas" to my coworkers?
