Can I still play video games as a Muslim?

Yes. Video games aren't haram in themselves. In Islam, most hobbies are allowed by default. What matters is that gaming doesn't make you miss your prayers, that you avoid games full of clearly haram content, and that you stay away from gambling-style spending like paid loot boxes.

Islamic law starts from a simple principle: everyday things like food, sports and hobbies are allowed unless there's a clear reason they're not. No verse or hadith forbids video games. So the question isn't "are games haram?" but "how am I playing them?"

1. Don't let games push out prayer

The biggest risk is "one more round" when it's time to pray. The Quran warns against anything that distracts from remembering Allah:

لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَـٰدُكُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ "Do not let your wealth or your children distract you from the remembrance of Allah." Quran 63:9

If wealth and children shouldn't distract you, a game shouldn't either.

2. Watch the content

Avoid games built around nudity or sexual content, or games that mock religion. Violence is more debated, and many scholars are fine with typical action and sports games. Use your judgment, and be more careful with what younger siblings or kids see.

3. Watch the money

Buying a game or a specific item is fine. Paying real money for a random reward, like many loot boxes and "gacha" pulls, looks a lot like gambling, which the Quran forbids (Quran 5:90). Many scholars advise avoiding these.

What about game music?

Scholars differ on music in general, and some converts choose to avoid it. Luckily, almost every game lets you turn the music off and keep the sound effects. That's an easy fix if it bothers you.

Time is a blessing too

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "There are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6412). Gaming as a break is fine. Gaming as your whole life isn't.

He also said, "Among the excellence of a person's Islam is that he leaves what does not concern him" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2317).

Key points
  • Video games are allowed in principle.
  • Never let gaming make you miss a prayer.
  • Avoid sexual content and games that mock religion.
  • Skip paid loot boxes, since they're close to gambling.
Tip: Install a prayer-time app with athan alerts, and pray before you start a long session. Then you can play without one eye on the clock.
