Do Muslims have to use water instead of toilet paper?
No, toilet paper alone is valid. Cleaning with dry material (called istijmar) is allowed, as long as you wipe at least three times and get properly clean. Using water is better and more thorough, and paper followed by water is best. Many Muslims in the West keep a small bottle or a bidet in the bathroom.
What the sunnah says
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ allowed cleaning with stones: "When any of you goes to relieve himself, he should take three stones to clean himself, for they will be enough for him" (Sunan Abu Dawud 40). Scholars agree that toilet paper does the same job.
He also used water. Anas ibn Malik said that he and another boy used to carry a container of water for the Prophet ﷺ so he could wash (Sahih al-Bukhari 150).
The Quran praises the people of Quba, who were known for washing with water after using the toilet (Sunan Abu Dawud 44):
The basic etiquette
- Use your left hand for cleaning, not your right (Sahih Muslim 262).
- Wipe at least three times, and keep going until you're clean. An odd number is recommended.
- If urine splashes on your clothes, wash that spot before you pray.
Paper, water or both?
- Paper only: valid.
- Water only: valid and better.
- Paper, then water: best, and the most hygienic.
Wet wipes work like toilet paper, so they count as a dry cleaning method.
Do I need wudu after using the toilet?
Yes, if you want to pray. Cleaning yourself (istinja) and wudu are two separate things. Using the toilet breaks your wudu, so after cleaning up, make a fresh wudu before your next prayer.
There's also a short du'a for entering the bathroom. The Prophet ﷺ used to say, "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith" (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from all evil and evil beings) (Sahih al-Bukhari 142).
Easy setups at home and work
- A handheld bidet sprayer or bidet seat attachment. They're cheap and easy to install.
- A small watering can or bottle kept next to the toilet.
- A travel bidet bottle for work, school and trips.
- Toilet paper alone is valid in Islam.
- Wipe at least three times, until clean.
- Water is better, and paper plus water is best.
- Use your left hand for cleaning.
