Do I have to eat with my right hand only?
Yes, as a rule. Eating and drinking with your right hand is a strongly emphasized sunnah, and some scholars consider it obligatory. If you have a real reason, like an injury or a disability, using your left hand is fine. Left-handed people can train their right hand for eating, even if they keep writing with the left.
What the Prophet ﷺ taught
Umar ibn Abi Salamah grew up in the Prophet's household. As a boy, his hand used to wander all over the shared plate. The Prophet ﷺ told him: "Boy, mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376, Sahih Muslim 2022).
In another hadith he said: "When any of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, let him drink with his right hand, for Satan eats and drinks with his left" (Sahih Muslim 2020).
Is it a sin to use the left?
Most scholars say eating with the right hand is a highly recommended sunnah, so leaving it without a reason is disliked. Some scholars go further and call it obligatory because of the strong wording in the hadith. Either way, the goal is the same: make it your habit.
What about a knife and fork?
The European habit of keeping the fork in the left hand is the tricky part for many converts. Some practical options:
- Cut, then switch. Cut your food, then move the fork to your right hand to eat. Many Americans already eat this way.
- Swap hands. Hold the knife in your left hand and the fork in your right.
- Help with the left. Holding a plate, a bowl or a piece of bread with your left hand is fine. What matters is the hand that brings food and drink to your mouth.
I'm left-handed. Now what?
Being left-handed isn't a flaw. Many left-handed Muslims write, throw and play with their left hand and simply eat with their right. It usually feels natural after a few weeks. If you physically can't use your right hand, you're excused. Islam doesn't ask more than you're able to do.
Many Muslims also extend this habit beyond meals, giving and receiving things with their right hand as a small sign of respect.
- Eat and drink with your right hand.
- Most scholars call it a strong sunnah, some call it obligatory.
- Your left hand can help hold things.
- Injury or disability is a valid excuse.
