Can I still sleep in on weekends as a Muslim?

Yes, after Fajr. You can't skip the dawn prayer, but once you've prayed it, going back to bed on a Saturday is allowed. And if you sleep through Fajr by accident, it's not a disaster: you pray it as soon as you wake up.

Fajr comes first

The five daily prayers have set times, and Fajr is the one between dawn and sunrise.

إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَـٰبًا مَّوْقُوتًا "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at specified times." Quran 4:103

So the "weekend lie-in" in Islam looks like this: wake up for Fajr, pray (it only takes a few minutes), then crawl back under the covers if you want.

Going back to sleep after Fajr

This is allowed. Some scholars say it's better to stay awake after Fajr, because the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prayed: "O Allah, bless my people in their early mornings" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2606). Many Muslims find that early hours are their most productive. But sleeping again isn't a sin, especially if you were up late, work night shifts, or simply need rest.

What if you sleep through it?

It happens to every Muslim at some point. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it should pray it when they remember (Sahih Muslim 684). There's no extra penalty. Just pray it as soon as you wake up, and try to plan better next time.

The problem is only when it becomes a habit you don't care about, like turning off the alarm on purpose every day.

The summer challenge

In the UK, Scandinavia, Germany or Canada, Fajr in June can be very early, sometimes before 3 or 4 a.m. Many Muslims there pray Fajr and go straight back to sleep. That's completely normal. In winter it's the opposite: Fajr is late enough that you might pray it before work without changing anything.

Tips for waking up

  • Set two alarms, and put one across the room.
  • Use a prayer app that adjusts Fajr time for your city.
  • Sleep a little earlier on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Keep your wudu routine simple and quick.
  • Ask a family member or friend to text you.
