Can I still say "bless you" when someone sneezes as a Muslim?
Yes. "Bless you" is a kind, everyday phrase, and there's nothing wrong with saying it. Islam also has its own beautiful sneeze etiquette: the person who sneezes says "Alhamdulillah," and the people around reply "Yarhamuk Allah." Many converts use both, depending on who sneezed.
Islam has its own sneeze etiquette
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that Allah likes sneezing and dislikes yawning (Sahih al-Bukhari 6223). He also taught a simple three-step exchange (Sahih al-Bukhari 6224):
- The person who sneezes: "Alhamdulillah" (praise be to Allah).
- Someone who hears it: "Yarhamuk Allah" (may Allah have mercy on you).
- The sneezer replies: "Yahdikumullah wa yuslih balakum" (may Allah guide you and set your affairs right).
It turns a tiny bodily moment into a prayer for each other. Once you get used to it, it becomes automatic.
What about non-Muslim friends and coworkers?
Some Jewish men used to sneeze near the Prophet ﷺ hoping he would say "may Allah have mercy on you." Instead, he would say: "May Allah guide you and grant you well-being" (Sunan Abi Dawud 5038).
So many scholars say that when a non-Muslim sneezes, you can reply "Yahdikumullah," or simply say "bless you" in English. Both are polite, and both wish them well.
Is "bless you" a problem?
Not really. You may hear stories that the phrase comes from old beliefs about the soul leaving the body, or from the plague. Whatever its history, today it simply means "I wish you well." Saying it doesn't mean you believe any superstition, and it isn't tied to another religion's worship.

When someone says "bless you" to you
Just say "thank you." If you're comfortable, quietly say "Alhamdulillah" right after your sneeze. Coworkers often get curious and ask what it means, which is an easy, friendly way to share a little bit of Islam without any lecture.
A small note on yawning
In the same teaching, the Prophet ﷺ advised holding back a yawn as much as you can (Sahih al-Bukhari 6223). Covering your mouth is good manners in every culture, so this one will feel familiar.
- Saying "bless you" is fine.
- The sunnah: "Alhamdulillah" after sneezing, "Yarhamuk Allah" in reply.
- For non-Muslims, "Yahdikumullah" or "bless you" both work.
- Try to hold back yawns.
