Can I wear hijab to a job interview?
Yes. Wear your hijab to the interview just as you'll wear it at work. In the US, UK and much of Europe, refusing to hire someone because of religious dress is generally illegal. Showing up as yourself also tells you early whether this employer is a good fit.
You can, and should
Some converts consider removing their hijab for the interview and putting it on after they're hired. It's understandable, but it often makes things harder: colleagues see a "change," and you start the job feeling you hid something. Hijab is part of who you are now. "Whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out" (Quran 65:2).
Your rights
- USA: Title VII of the Civil Rights Act forbids religious discrimination in hiring. In 2015, the Supreme Court ruled against Abercrombie & Fitch for not hiring a young woman because of her headscarf (EEOC v. Abercrombie & Fitch).
- UK: the Equality Act 2010 protects religion and belief, including in recruitment.
- EU: religious discrimination is banned, though the EU Court of Justice has allowed private employers to apply a consistent "neutrality" policy banning all visible religious symbols. France also bans hijab for public-sector workers.

How to prepare
- Look polished: a neat, simple hijab in a neutral or professional color.
- Dress for the industry: a blazer, long shirt and trousers work in most offices.
- Handshakes: decide in advance how you'll handle them. A warm smile and hand on the heart with a brief explanation is common.
- Questions: employers shouldn't ask about your religion, but if hijab comes up, answer calmly and confidently.
If you face bias
If you suspect you were rejected because of your hijab, write down what was said and when. In the US, you can contact the EEOC or CAIR; in the UK, ACAS or the Equality Advisory Support Service. Rejection can still happen for other reasons, so don't assume, but don't stay silent if it's clear. See Can I hide that I'm Muslim at work?
