Do I need to be circumcised to become Muslim?
No. Circumcision is not a condition for becoming Muslim. You can take your shahada today, uncircumcised. For men, circumcision is part of the sunnah, and scholars differ on whether it's obligatory; for adult converts, many scholars say it isn't required if it would cause real harm, fear or hardship. It's never a reason to delay your shahada.
The shahada comes first
Islam begins with belief and the shahada. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sent Mu'adh to teach people, he told him to start with the testimony of faith, then prayer, then charity (Sahih al-Bukhari 1395). Circumcision wasn't a condition at the door.
Many people embraced Islam in the Prophet's time as adults, and there's no record of them being turned away for this.
What Islam teaches about circumcision
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Five practices are characteristics of the Fitra: circumcision, shaving the pubic region, clipping the nails and cutting the moustaches short" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5889). He also mentioned that Prophet Abraham was circumcised at the age of eighty (Sahih al-Bukhari 3356).
- Shafi'i and Hanbali: obligatory for men.
- Hanafi and Maliki: a strongly recommended sunnah.
Adult converts
For an adult man, scholars look at the situation:
- If it's safe and you're willing, many scholars encourage it, done by a qualified doctor under anesthesia.
- If you're afraid, have a medical risk or it would push you away from Islam, many scholars say it's not required.
- Your prayers and faith are valid either way.
Speak with a doctor and a knowledgeable imam. Don't let anyone pressure you into a rushed decision.
What about women?
Women don't need any procedure to become Muslim. Harmful practices known as female genital mutilation (FGM) are illegal in Europe and the USA, and many scholars and Muslim organizations condemn them. Islam forbids causing harm.
