Is it a sin to take off my hijab after wearing it?

Yes, leaving hijab is a sin, but it's not the end of your faith. Hijab is an obligation, so stopping it is a shortcoming like missing other obligations. But many sincere women struggle with hijab, take it off, and come back. Allah's mercy is bigger than any sin, and the door of repentance is always open.

An honest answer

Hijab is required for adult Muslim women (Quran 24:31), so choosing to stop wearing it is a sin. But it's important to keep it in proportion. Taking off hijab doesn't make you a non-Muslim. You're still a believer, still obliged to pray, and still loved by Allah when you turn back to Him. Treat it as a struggle to overcome, not proof that you've failed.

You're not alone

Many women, converts and born Muslims, have taken off hijab after wearing it. Common reasons include:

  • Harassment, fear or discrimination.
  • Family pressure or a difficult marriage.
  • Feeling judged by other Muslims.
  • A low point in faith, or feeling like a hypocrite.
  • Wearing it before they were ready.

Understanding your reason helps you find the right fix. See What if I'm scared to wear hijab in public?

Don't despair

۞ قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'" Quran 39:53

Shaytan often uses guilt to push people further away: "You've already failed, so why bother praying?" Don't let one struggle pull down the rest of your faith. Keep praying, keep making du'a, and keep good company. See Will Allah forgive me if I keep committing the same sin?

Coming back

  • Repent sincerely: regret it, ask Allah's forgiveness, and intend to return.
  • Start where you can: hijab for prayer and the mosque, then specific outings.
  • Fix the cause: find supportive friends, deal with family issues, choose comfortable styles.
  • Be gentle with yourself: the Prophet ﷺ said religion is easy, and to aim for what's right and be glad of good news (Sahih al-Bukhari 39).
Key points
  • Leaving hijab is a sin, not disbelief.
  • Many women struggle and return.
  • Never despair of Allah's mercy.
  • Return step by step and fix the cause.
Tip: Don't wait until you "feel ready" to come back fully. Put your hijab on for one prayer today. Small steps rebuild the habit.
